ANSI 207-2006

What Is ANSI 207-2006? ANSI 207-2006 is the American National Standard for High-Visibility Public Safety Vests.

The public safety vest standard was created in response to public safety user group demand for a high visibility safety vest that differentiated from the traditional ANSI 107-2004 compliance design.

Police, EMS, EMT & Fire are considered but not limited to the types of public safety personnel that primarily wear these types of garments.

The primary concern was a need for a vest designed to provide tactical capability which was not achievable with the traditional ANSI-107 garments.

ANSI 2007 is not recognized in the 23 CFR Part 634 as a compliant garment.

What Makes It Different From ANSI 107-2004?

The main difference between ANSI-207 & ANSI-107 is that the ANSI-207 standard requires less fluorescent background material than an ANSI-107 Class 2 Vest (see chart). The amount of required background material on an ANSI-207 garment (450 in2) falls right between ANSI-107 Class 1 (217 in2) & Class 2 (775 in2).

This difference in background material allows for the design to be shortened allowing easy access to the equipment belts that are worn by most public safety personnel.

Interesting Fact

While law enforcement officers fall under the public safety personnel category, they are encouraged to follow ANSI 107-2004 Class 2 or greater guidelines while performing any of their traffic control duties.

One important factor in comparing the two standards is that they both require the same minimum amounts of reflective material and both must have at least one 360° horizontal reflective stripe around the torso.
